Free first aid education for Tassie students

The St John First Aid in Schools program gives Tasmanian children the knowledge and confidence to help in an emergency. So far, we have taught more than ten thousand children since the program started.

The knowledge and skills gained in our First Aid in Schools Program will develop First Aid awareness in school children and contribute to building a more resilient community. This learning is age-appropriate and integrates with the Tasmanian Curriculum.

Delivered through engaging, age-appropriate activities, the free program introduces students to essential first aid skills, including how to recognise an emergency, call Triple Zero (000), get help and respond safely.

Sessions are available for students from Kinder to Year 6, with limited availability for Years 7 and 8.

Helping young Tasmanians act with confidence

Emergencies can happen anywhere, including at home, at school or while playing sport. Learning first aid from an early age helps children understand that they can make a difference by staying calm, seeking help and taking simple, safe action.

The First Aid in Schools program brings practical first aid education into Tasmanian classrooms. Sessions build progressively across year levels so students can develop their knowledge and confidence as they move through school. Students learn through demonstrations, discussion and practical activities designed for their age group.

What students learn

Sessions are tailored to each year level and delivered in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

Through practical activities and demonstrations, students build the skills and confidence to know what to do in an emergency. Depending on their age, they may learn:

How to get help including when and how to call Triple Zero (000)
How to respond to an unconscious person and put simple first aid steps into action
Essential first aid skills for situations such as bleeding, burns, choking, asthma and anaphylaxis
CPR and defibrillation awareness for older students

Our program builds progressively as students move through school, introducing more advanced first aid skills at appropriate year levels.

Frequently asked questions

First Aid in Schools is delivered free of charge to participating schools.

The program is available from Kinder to Year 6. A limited number of sessions may also be available for Years 7 and 8.

Sessions run for between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the students’ year level.

We deliver First Aid in Schools in metropolitan, regional and rural Tasmanian communities, subject to presenter availability. Schools outside the major population centres are encouraged to submit an enquiry so we can discuss available options.
